Rotator Cuff

“Rotator cuff issues? Join the cue…”

What is it?

The term rotator cuff is often thrown around slightly too regularly. If you ask someone with a painful shoulder what the problem is you will most likely get the answer “rotator cuff”. The rotator cuff is a series of muscles that join the shoulder blade to the upper arm bone. A tendonitis is painful inflammation of the tendon and can occur for many different reasons, finding out the reason why your pain has occurred is important as this will affect the treatment outcome.

What does it feel like?

Rotator cuff pain can range from a severe unrelenting stab, to a dull throbbing ache, the pain is often referred to as the toothache of the shoulder. Sleeping is often a issue as laying on the affected arm will be painful. Activities are often affected with any overhead movements being excruciating.

How can we help?

First a diagnosis will be made, this will include the specific tendon affected and the reason this tendon was overloaded. The treatment plan will first aim to reduce the pain, once this has been accomplished the therapist will begin to correct the causative factors behind the onset. This often includes corrective exercises.
