Slipped Disc Trapped Nerve

“A slipped disc or trapped nerve is an incredibly painful and worrying condition to experience, the exact location of slip and severity will be deduced by your chiropractic physician which will shape the following treatment”

What is a slipped disc/ trapped nerve?

The spine is created from bones (vertebrae) separated by discs. The discs are made of a thick outer skin (annulus) and a gooey inner bubble (nucleus pulpous). With repetitive overuse, or sometimes acute trauma such as in a car accident, the nucleus can squeeze out (herniate) through the annulus, this creates a great deal of pain and can irritate local nerves. When a nerve is irritated we often see severe pain in the neck, pins and needles in the hands/arm, weakness in certain muscle groups, reduced reflexes, excessive muscular tension as well as spasms and headaches.

What does pain from the nerve feel like?

A slipped disc in the neck will give acute, agonising pain which is usually unrelenting in nature. Depending on how long the symptoms have been present will often depend what degree of arm symptoms are present. People with a slipped disc in the neck will often feel uncomfortable trying to sleep at night, they will start to use the symptomatic arm less and will begin to guard the neck. Often patients will feel pins and needles, numbness and even weakness in the affected arm.

How can chiropractic help?

Chiropractic can help by first performing a detailed history and examination to deduce the level of the spine that is involved, once this has been established your chiropractor will begin to tailor a treatment plan to your specific needs, this can include manipulation, acupuncture, massage, traction and home exercises.
