“A severe throbbing primary headache”

What is it?

Migraine is a primary headache, which means the headache has no other associated causes. It is a relatively common condition affecting 1 in 5 women and 1 in 15 men. Migraines are grouped into 3 categories

Classical – This is a Migraine with a aura

Common – A Migraine with no aurora

Aura without migraine – A “silent” migraine

The exact cause of migraines is unknown, however we are aware of “triggers” such as stress, certain foods, lack of sleep and many others unique to the suffers.

Migraine Treatment

What does it feel like?

Migraines have varying symptoms but often will follow a pattern of:

  • Prodromal – often days before the headache onset
  • Aura – hours before onset
  • Pain – throbbing headache onset, can last for 72hours
  • Postdrome– residual symptoms

The aura is variable with the type of migraine experienced, however can often involve visual disturbances.
